John J. Podolak, 70, legendary racer in Central New York, died Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at his home. Born in Auburn, John was well known as a modified stock car racer, racing area tracks such as Weedsport, Rolling Wheels and Canandaigua. His career started at 16, racing his father’s car in Waterloo and continued on until a short time ago when he even raced Karts. John raced through out the North East, Florida, and Canada, promoting and racing in the DIRT Series. He won the 1977 Modified Track Championship at Rolling Wheels, and the 1982 Kodak Park DIRT Driver of the Year award.
He is survived by his wife Terry Grosser Podolak of Auburn; two sons Bill Field of Weedsport and Ryan Podolak of Auburn; daughter Lynn Sheets of Weedsport; step daughters Kim Bacon of Weedsport and Tammy Cox of Jordan; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
John was predeceased by his parents John J. and Elizabeth Gray Podolak.
Friends are invited to join the family for a service to be offered Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at 11 am in the Cheche Funeral Home Inc., 1778 Clark Street Road, Auburn. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Calling hours for John will be held Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm in the funeral home.
