Concetta A. “Susie” Portello (Di Dio Magri), 90, of Auburn, died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2018, in Rochester’s Strong Memorial Hospital.
A native of Gela, Italy, Concetta worked for many years for Dunn & McCarthy Shoe Company. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, knitting, crocheting, tending to her garden and her flowers. She would donate many of her crocheted blankets to the surrounding nursing homes in the area. A devout Catholic, she was a communicant of St. Francis Church. Above all, Concetta cherished the time spent with her loving family.
She is survived by her daughters, Virginia Applebee and her husband, Richard, of Port Byron, and Kathy Malvaso, of Florida; sisters, Nucca Terza and her husband, Rinaldo, Rosetta LaRosa and her husband, Giuseppe, and Emelia Tuccio; brother, Luciano Di Dio Magri and his wife, Phillipa, all of Italy; grandchildren including, Paul Applebee and his wife, Kathy, of Owasco, John Applebee, of New York City, Jim Lerario and his wife, Mimi, of Florida, Debbie Leone and her husband, Tom, of Auburn, Jerry DeBenedetto and his wife, Mary, of Buffalo, Mike DeBenedetto and his wife, Robin, of Auburn, Ted DeBenedetto, of Auburn, Margo Soysa and her husband, Chris, of Rochester, Tom Malvaso and his wife, Allison, of Syracuse, Tina Quiqley and Mike Portello, of Indiana, Carol Steele and her husband, Ron, of Geneva, Donna Hilyer and her husband, Steve, of Waterloo, and Tony Portello and his wife, Lynn, of Owls Head, N.Y.; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was predeceased by her parents, Salvatore and Virgina Di Dio Magri; her husband, John; her sons, Joe, Chuck, Anthony “Gabe,” and Robert Portello; her daughters, Angie Lerario and Shirley DeBenedetto.
Friends are invited to join the family for a Mass of Christian burial to be offered at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Francis Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Calling hours for Concetta will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Cheche Funeral Home Inc., 1778 Clark St. Road, Auburn.
