Thomas Richard Scanlon Sr., passed on Sunday, Feb. 25, 2018. He was born during the depression on Sept. 7, 1926. His parents, along with his seven siblings moved from the city to the country in order to sustain their lives. Thomas enlisted at the early age of 17 into the United States Navy in 1943 where he trained, traveled the South Pacific, and was stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in 1945. He was honorably discharged at the end of World War II. He then married Mary Horton, and built their home on Beech Tree Road, where they raised three boys. Tom was employed at ALCO for many of his post-war years, and was considered a jack-of-all-trades.
He is survived by his three sons, Thomas Jr. (Dan), Gary (Barb), and Christopher (Jamie) Scanlon; a sister, Joan Cuff; a brother, Charles Scanlon; the most endearing loves of his life, his granddaughters, Erin and Jessica Scanlon; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Tom was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Mary Theresa Horton Scanlon; brothers, John, Harold, James, and Daniel Jr.; and sister, Laura Kolczynski.
Friends are invited to join the family for a Mass of Christian burial to be offered at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 3, in St. Mary’s Church. Burial with full military honors will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
Arrangements are by the Cheche Funeral Home Inc., 1778 Clark St. Road, Auburn.
